Mac workshop timer: Apple Clock or TeenyTool?
Choose the timer by continuity, visibility, alert, and session structure, not by where its launcher lives.
The practical answer: use Apple Clock when a countdown must continue while the Mac sleeps or when you need multiple named timers. Use TeenyTool's Timer for one local countdown while its Timer view remains open. Use its Stopwatch to measure a rehearsal task. Use Pomodoro only when the workshop is intentionally organized into focus and break cycles.
A menu bar launcher does not mean the countdown itself persists in the menu bar. TeenyTool opens a timing view from its menu bar app, and the current source stops that view's update timer when the view disappears. Test the exact surface you plan to leave open.

01Start with the continuity requirement
Write what the timer must survive before choosing the app. An exercise countdown may only need to stay visible for 12 minutes. A break timer may need to continue if the Mac sleeps. A complex session may need separate named timers for the exercise, break, and hard stop.
Also record who must see it. An instructor-only timer can remain in a utility window. An audience timer must be placed deliberately on the shared display. Neither Apple Clock nor TeenyTool should appear on the audience screen by accident.
Use one primary clock and one written backup for a high-stakes room. Several simultaneous timers create conflicting alerts and make recovery harder.
02Use Apple Clock for continuity and multiple timers
Apple Clock is the safer default when continuity matters. Apple says its timers continue while you use other apps and while the Mac sleeps. Each timer can have a name and sound, and current macOS versions can run multiple timers.
The tradeoff is window placement. Decide whether the Clock window stays on the instructor's screen, moves to the audience screen, or remains hidden until needed. Test that placement with the exact mirror or extend mode used in the room.
Apple's Stopwatch also continues while you use other apps and while the Mac sleeps. Use it when you want the built-in route and do not need TeenyTool lap-copy behavior.
03Keep TeenyTool's Timer view open
TeenyTool's Timer accepts hours, minutes, and seconds and starts with 1, 5, 10, 15, and 25-minute buttons. It supports start, pause, resume, and reset. At completion, the current source plays three system beeps.
The countdown uses a clock-based end time while the view is active, so a delayed UI update does not subtract fixed ticks. The view invalidates its update timer when it disappears. For a workshop, keep that Timer view open and prove that it remains where the instructor expects it.
The duration-button editor changes view state only. Those edits are not stored as persistent room presets. Type or select the duration at the start of the session and keep the written duration in the runbook.
04Use Stopwatch to measure the rehearsal
Use a stopwatch when the question is "how long did that take?" Time the display setup, exercise introduction, package install, or room reset before assigning those steps a countdown.
TeenyTool's Stopwatch measures against a clock-based start time, supports stop, resume, reset, and laps, and can copy lap rows. Its update timer also stops when the view disappears, so keep the view open during the measurement.
Record laps only for repeatable sections you intend to improve. A rehearsal note such as "display setup: 2:14" is more useful than a long list of unlabeled timestamps.
05Use Pomodoro only for intentional cycles
TeenyTool's Pomodoro view defaults to 25-minute focus, 5-minute short break, 15-minute long break, and four focus sessions before the long break. Those values can be edited in the view, which shows session progress and supports pause, skip, and reset.
After a session completes, the current source plays two beeps and advances after a short delay. The configured durations are view state rather than persistent workshop settings, and the update timer stops when the view disappears.
This fits a writing room, study block, or coworking session whose format is announced in advance. It is a poor default for a lecture or live demo that needs flexible teaching time.
06Prove the timer in the room path
The Mac workshop room setup checklist treats the timer and audience display as separate acceptance paths. For the timer, record the tool, duration, alert, required visibility, interruption test, owner, and backup.
For example: "Instructor starts a 12-minute TeenyTool Timer and keeps its view open. Announce two minutes remaining. If the view closes or TeenyTool is unavailable, start a 12-minute Apple Clock timer." Test that instruction instead of assuming it works.
If attendees must see the countdown, place it deliberately after the external-monitor preset acceptance test. A timer choice does not decide which screen the audience sees.
